Continuous Rice Cultivation Forces Huge Mining of Nutrients from the Top Soil

It is estimated that there are 165 million living in Bangladesh. Basically, their food habit depends on eating rice three times a day. However, all people are not so lucky to get rice everyday; there are some very poor people who can not afford to manage the daily food required for them and their family members.

In Bangladesh, there are three seasons in a year for rice cultivation, i.e., Aaus, Aaman and Boro. Apparently, Boro season is the most important for the farmers. Because, this season produces the biggest chunk of rice production compared to the whole amount of rice produced in a year. If there be any natural calamities during these rice producing seasons, people bound to face tremendous miseries due to food deficiencies.

Continuous rice cultivation forces huge mining of nutrients from the top soil. Although we may consider the occasional flood as the replenishing activities of the nature that adds nutrients to the rice field carried by the flood water. But, we can not control the flood and take decision on the amount of water and the nutrients to be carried out by the flood. We can not assure a non destructive, nutrient carrying and benevolent  flood in every year for the rice producing areas in Bangladesh. That is why, the farmers need to develop some other earning source for their livelihood.

Look at the picture. A marginally resourced people has find a way to sale sliced green mangoes with some mustard sauce called Kaasundi. People are are purchasing it and the person is earning something for his family. He is an example of a small business for a small area. Now, let us think globally. Look at the globe, study the requirement of the wealthy people living at the different parts in the globe, i.e., in Europe, former Russian republic, North and South America or Australia and search for the opportunity for marketing your products to them as per their requirements.

Now, look at your your strength and resources. Decide what you can sale to the other people of the world. Probably small and cottage industry is the answer that needs a continuous training for the working people, smart study for the global demands for the consumers and a genuine commitment from the politicians. Globalization has opened a huge market for the Bangladeshi people.

Bangladeshi people need to grasp the advantage of globalization and should produce some products for the global market. Only rice production is not the most viable option for everything we need to live in this beautiful world.
